Find an NIHB counsellor in Calgary

Every listing comes from the official NIHB mental health provider list for Alberta. Counsellors with verified profiles appear first.

How NIHB counselling works in Calgary

  1. Tell us what you need. A short, private intake: what's going on, who you'd feel comfortable with, and that you're in or near Calgary.
  2. We find the fit. A real person reads it and checks fit and availability with NIHB-enrolled counsellors in Calgary, and calls them for you.
  3. You meet in person. We make a warm introduction. The counsellor bills NIHB directly, so your sessions cost $0.

Looking for a therapist in Calgary rather than a “counsellor”? On NIHB, they're the same benefit. Psychologists, social workers and certified counsellors are all covered.

Questions

NIHB counselling in Calgary: questions.

Yes, if you're eligible. Status First Nations people and Inuit enrolled with a land claim organization pay $0. The NIHB-enrolled counsellors in Calgary bill the program directly, so you never see an invoice, a receipt or a reimbursement form.

Browse the 355 counsellors on this page and tap “Request an introduction” on anyone who feels right, or start a free intake and a real person matches you. Either way, we contact the counsellor personally, check fit and availability, and make a warm introduction. No cold calls on your end.

Yes. 23 counsellors in Calgary self-identify as Indigenous. If that matters to you, say so in your intake and we'll match on it first.

NIHB mental health counselling covers up to 22 hours a year for eligible First Nations and Inuit people. If you need more, your counsellor can request an extension through NIHB. That's their paperwork, not yours.

In person. Wapan only matches for in-person counselling: a counsellor in or near Calgary you can sit across from.

Honestly, no. NIHB doesn't cover Métis or non-status people, and Wapan is built around NIHB-covered care. The Otipemisiwak Métis Government (formerly the Métis Nation of Alberta) may cover counselling for citizens, and Friendship Centres and community health centres can point you to low-cost care near Calgary.

Matching takes days, and a crisis can't wait. Call Hope for Wellness at 1-855-242-3310 or call or text 988. Both are free, confidential and open 24/7.

Not sure who's right? That's our whole job.

Tell us what you're looking for and a real person finds the fit in Calgary. It's free, and you're matched by a person, not an algorithm.
